Writing the Body

Sunday, February 20 - 1:00 PM

The human body is perhaps the most abundant source of metaphor and wonderment in poetry. How can we harness this abundance and variety of possibility that the human body offers to our imaginations, taking what’s most powerful about traditional ways of “writing the body” (love poems, spiritual writings, science writing, etc.) for lessons in craft and form, while also exploring new forms of improvisation, playfulness, honesty, and candor? This seminar will combine lively discussion and analysis of poetry (and occasionally prose) by published authors, in-class prompts and writing exercises with opportunities for real-time feedback, and discussion of works-in-progress that students may be developing outside of the seminar space.
