In this moment of unsurety, of staying at home more, of reconsidering the ways we do things, many are turning to their reading for solace, for ideas or for escape. This seminar will tap into the obvious and hopefully less-obvious connections between what we read and the poetry we write. Participants will be asked to be ready to discuss at least one piece of reading that they feel has deeply affected the way they write, and the seminar as a whole will consider the ways certain reading might surprise us when we turn back to our original work. What happens when a contemporary poet is influenced by a 16th century writer? What happens when a poet is changed by a novel? by an essay? by a gardening manual? Participants will also be asked to have an original poem to read and have discussed during the meeting.
