Tianyu Zhang presents his Distinguished Major Jazz Bass Recital on Saturday, March 28th at 8 PM in Old Cabell Hall. The recital will feature jazz standards by John Coltrane and Chick Corea played on upright bass, Charlie Parker’s solo on electric bass, as well as modern jazz fusion pieces by Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller, and Joshua Redman.
Tianyu Zhang is a 4th-year student, majoring in music and statistics. He is hugely grateful to study with Prof. Spaar who helped and inspired him to find the deepest love and passion for music and the strong calling to pursue it as a profession for the rest of his life. During his time at UVA, he has participated in New Music Ensemble, Jazz Small Group, Jazz Ensemble. He has received the 2019 UVA Arts Council Distinguished Artist Award in Music for demonstrating outstanding achievement in his musical study. Outside UVA, Tianyu has toured with multiple young jazz fusion groups around Southwest China and played regularly in music venues in Chengdu with Jazz faculty members from Sichuan Conservatory of Music.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda. Parking is available in the central grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Rd, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner. Handicap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.
