Second Street Gallery is pleased to present Susie Ganch: Different Land, Different Sea, on view in the Main Gallery May 1 – May 29, 2020. The First Friday opening reception will be held on Friday, May 1, from 5:30-7:30pm.
Susie Ganch is a multi-disciplinary artist, sculptor, jeweler, and educator living in Richmond, VA and working with “trash, cast-offs, collected, and given things”. Her exhibition at Second Street Gallery will focus on themes of the environment and materials with a brand new, site-specific installation utilizing both sculpture and sound. Drift, the focal piece in the installation, comments on our world oversaturated with mechanical noise. Over the course of several months, Ganch recorded a daily journal of sounds through the Voice Memo app, ultimately creating a soundscape in Drift of layered noises drifting discordantly across stylized clouds. Visitors will also hear the ever-present “tweet” of the iPhone text message, epitomizing distraction and a lack of presence. By stretching, flipping, and twisting the “tweet”, Ganch manipulates the sound back into a “real bird”, and in this way the rendered becomes the new normal.
