Join us for a crash course to get started writing short stories. This seminar will help participants who are newer to writing fiction as well as novelists who jumped straight into writing longform fiction. Short stories are a great smaller scale way to refine our fiction skills, and practicing with short fiction gives novelists skills that translate to crafting polished novel chapters.
In the first session, we’ll cover the essentials about story structure, appropriate scope for a short story, and an overview of key writing craft elements. We’ll read published short stories and discuss the choices writers made, analyzing what works and what doesn’t.
Between sessions, students will write their own short stories. In our second meeting, we’ll address questions that arose as participants applied what they learned in the first session and offer feedback on several pages for each writer’s story via class discussion.
