The University of Virginia Department of Music presents harpsichordist Peter Sykes on Tuesday, February 27th at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall on the historic Lawn.
The concert titled "With Freedom Comes Responsibility", is an exploration of non-measured harpsichord music (in which pitches are specified but not rhythms). Works will include Frescobaldi, Froberger, Louis Couperin, and the monumental Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue by JS Bach. This event is free and open to the public.
Peter Sykes is one of the most distinguished and versatile keyboard artists performing today. His playing has variously been called “compelling and moving,” “magnificent and revelatory,” and “bold, imaginative, and amazingly accurate.” He has appeared in recital for the American Guild of Organists, the Southeastern Historical Keyboard Society, the Organ Historical Society, American Institute of Organbuilders, International Society of Organbuilders, at the Library of Congress, Boston Early Music Festival, Aston Magna Festival, New England Bach Festival, Portland Chamber Music Festival, New Hampshire Music Festival, and with Ensemble Project Ars Nova, The King’s Noyse, Musica Antiqua Köln, Blue Heron, and throughout the United States. In demand as a teacher and mentor, he is on the Historical Performance faculty of the Juilliard School of Music, University of Michigan, and Boston University.
Sykes will coach the Baroque Orchestra in a free open workshop on Monday, Feb. 26, from 7 - 9 pm in room 113 Old Cabell Hall.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA’s historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda (map). Parking is available in the central grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Rd, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner. Handicap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.
