Navigating the Query Trenches

Saturday, February 15 - 1:00 PM

There’s a reason many writers describe querying as “going into the trenches,” but like any battle, it’s easier to survive the fight if you start with the right tools in your armory.

In this course, we’ll explore resources for building (and narrowing down) a list of agents to query, and the pros-and-cons of non-traditional paths like twitter pitch contests, mentorship competitions, and writing conferences. Participants will get the opportunity to start a personalized list of agents based on their genre of choice and learn which red flags may mean the difference between a good agent and a predatory “shmagent.”

For the hands-on portion of the seminar, Query Letter MadLibs will reveal how a few simple questions can pare a story down to its key elements and take some of the angst out of pitching. And since the person who knows a book best is often the worst person to pitch it, we’ll work together to draft each others’ query letters. This class is suitable for writers of all levels.
