Charlottesville Symphony Concert

Sunday, March 19 - 3:30 PM

The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia continues its 48th season on Saturday, March 18, 8:00pm, at Old Cabell Hall on the Grounds of the University of Virginia and Sunday, March 19, 3:30pm, at Charlottesville High School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center.

The program includes Antonín Dvok’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor (From the New World) and Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is his only concerto for the violin.  Considered a giant of the solo violin repertoire, this difficult work is deceiving in its deeply felt melodies and sublime serenity.  Virginia native Brendon Elliott is the soloist.  He is an alumnus of Michael Tilson Thomas’s innovative brainchild, the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, Florida.

One of the most beloved symphonies of all time, Antonín Dvok’s Symphony No. 9 (“From the New World”) is his folk-inspired love letter to America.

Paul Ghun Kim, former Oregonian and now Music Director of the Changwon Philharmonic in Korea, is the guest conductor.

Kim’s appearance is underwritten in part by the Davidson Guest Artist Fund.  Brendon Elliott’s appearance is made possible by the Angus Macaulay Visiting Artists Fund.  The Joseph and Robert Cornell Foundation is the lead sponsor of the Charlottesville Symphony’s entire 2022-23 concert season.

Free parking is available in the UVA Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street South on Saturday nights and at Charlottesville High School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center on Sunday afternoons.  The Charlottesville Free Trolley stops at McCormick Road near the UVA Amphitheater, in close proximity to Old Cabell Hall.  Both venues are wheelchair accessible.
