Charlottesville Symphony Concert

Sunday, September 29 - 3:30 PM

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia opens its 45th season with concerts on Saturday, September 28, 8:00pm, at Old Cabell Hall on the Grounds of the University of Virginia and Sunday, September 29, 3:30pm, at Charlottesville High School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center.

Music Director Benjamin Rous leads the orchestra in a program that opens with Mozart’s festive miniature Symphony No. 32.  Ramal by Syrian-American composer Kareem Roustom is steeped in the musical traditions of the Near East.  The New York Times called it “propulsive, colorful and an immediately appealing creation.”  Albert Kim is the soloist in Johannes Brahms’ virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major.

Albert Kim made his formal recital debuts in the United States and Europe as a Carnegie Hall/European Concert Hall Organization Rising Star, followed by recitals at Ravinia, Caramoor and the Metropolitan Museum of Art as part of the Kim-Jacobsen-Arron Trio.  He is an Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Central Missouri and the pianist of Table Top Opera, a multimedia performance collective based in Rochester, New York.

The orchestra’s 2019-20 season is supported in part by a major grant from the Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation.

In-depth program notes are posted on the orchestra’s website, two weeks prior to each Masterworks concert.

Free parking is available in the UVA Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street South on Saturday nights and at Charlottesville High School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center on Sunday afternoons.  The Charlottesville Free Trolley stops at McCormick Road near the UVA Amphitheater, in close proximity to Old Cabell Hall.  Both venues are wheelchair accessible.
