Annual Meeting and Ivy Talk

Sunday, September 15 - 2:00 PM

Join us for our Annual Meeting and an Ivy Talk on Mrs. Mary Carr Greer and the Talented Tenth. Learn about how River View Farm's Mrs. Mary Carr Greer, through her work as a teacher, principal, club organizer, and active community leader, designate her as a member of the Talented Tenth.

The Talented Tenth, a term popularized by civil rights activist W.E.B. Du Bois in the early twentieth century, commonly describes the leadership class of African Americans. Members of this class typically received higher education and then went on to assume positions related to education or religion in their communities, where they utilized their experiences to enact social change.

Olivia Brubaker is the program coordinator at the Ivy Creek Foundation. She graduated from Christopher Newport University in May 2024 with a Bachelor's in History and minors in Literature, Leadership, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
