Albemarle Symphony Orchestra Spring Conc

Saturday, March 16 - 3:30 PM

The Albemarle Symphony Orchestra will be playing a selection of famous classical pieces.

Jean Sibelius' Symphony No. 2 in D Major is his most popular and most recorded symphony. Written and premiered at a time of Russian oppression of Finland, many listeners associated the grand final movement with Finland's struggle for freedom. A critic at the premier called it "one of the few symphonic creations of our time that point in the same direction as Beethoven’s symphonies."

Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo is by far his most well known work. The piece was inspired by the gardens at the Royal Palace at Aranjuez. Rodrigo himself said that the piece is meant to evoke "the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds, and the gushing of fountains" in those gardens. The ASO will be joined by Humberto Sales on classical guitar. Brazilian born Humberto Sales studied classical and flamenco guitar in Brazil before moving to the United states. He eventually settled in Charlottesville, VA where he teaches guitar and performs solo as well as with various musical groups.
