Life After High School Transition and Resource Fair
A FREE Event for Students with Disabilities and their families.
March 17th (8:30 am - 1 pm)
at Piedmont Virginia Community College, 501 College Drive, Charlottesville, VA

VA Dept. of Motor Vehicles (DMV Connect)– ID cards available –
please bring your child’s birth certificate, proof of residence - DMV cost is $10. Any DMV transactions other than ID Cards can be processed as well

Information sessions include:
* ABLEnow Accounts- Tax Advantage Savings Program for Individuals with Disabilities. Presenter: Becky Nelson, Virginia529 | ABLEnow
* I’m Determined – Session for Youth to practice skills associated with self-determined behavior. Presenter: I’m Determined - JMU/TTAC
* Job Applications & Interviewing – Introduction to skills needed to correctly apply & interview. Presenter: David Terrell and Cherelle Grady (The Choice Group)
* Understanding Social Security Disability Claims - Discuss the definition of disability according to Social Security Administration standards and the case adjudication process. Presenter: Melissa Phillips, Professional Relations Officer (Virginia Disability Determination Services)
* Making a Successful Transition from High School to College –learn the differences in disability services in high school & college, and what you can do now while you are still in high school to prepare. Presenter: Susan Hannifan, Disability Services Counselor (Piedmont Virginia Community College)
* Alternatives to Guardianship– Discuss Supported Decision Making Options and Q & A. Presenter: Dana Traynham, Senior Staff Attorney (disAbility Law Center of Virginia)
* Special Needs Trusts – What is a trust? An overview and opportunity to have questions answered. Presenter: Neal Walters, Attorney (Scott Kroner, PLC)
* Division of Rehabilitative Services 101 – learn how DARS vocational rehabilitation (VR) program offers services to empower individuals with disabilities to enter the work force or return to work. Presenter: Naomi Aitken, Counselor Manager (DARS)
* Parents Pave the Way- Five powerful strategies for steering your child's life toward high expectations & happiness. Presenter: Courtney Pugh, Family Support Specialist (Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center-PEATC)
* Gateway to Services & Case Management -5 W’s of Services: WHO is eligible for services, WHAT services are available, WHEN to apply, WHERE to begin the process, & WHY services are important? Presenter: Lisa Hearl, Program Manager-ID Case Management Services (Region Ten Community Service Board)
* SMART Start to Life – Budgeting and Managing your Finances as you transition to adulthood. Presenter: Cassandra Riggin (UVA Community Credit Union)
