A Publishing Playbook for New Novelists

Saturday, June 29 - 12:00 PM

You’ve finished your novel. Now what? The publishing process can often feel opaque and confusing for emerging writers. In this class, I will discuss the ins and outs of the publishing industry, including the pros and cons of an MFA program, researching agents, writing query letters, what to do once you receive an agent offer, the signs of a compatible editor, and more. We will also discuss how to center yourself during the publishing process by focusing on your goals. There will be time in class devoted to a few writing exercises.

Instructor Crystal Hana Kim is the author of The Stone Home (April 2024) and If You Leave Me (2018), which was named a best book of 2018 by over a dozen publications. She is the recipient of the 2022 National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35 Award, nominated by Min Jin Lee. She is also a 2017 PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize winner. Her work has been published in The Paris Review, Guernica, ELLE, and elsewhere. She is a contributing editor at Apogee Journal and lives in Brooklyn, New York with her family.
