A Picture's Worth

Saturday, February 12 - 1:00 PM

This two-seminar series will help writers identify effective techniques used to enhance stories told visually in film and television and translate them for use in our writing. Effective visual storytelling is immersive: the viewer feels like they are there in the world created by the makers. We aim to do the same in our writing, and this seminar series will give prose writers concrete tools you can incorporate into your writing process to draw readers fully into the world on the page.

The first session will cover the big ideas: common techniques visual storytellers use to enhance viewers’ experiences. We’ll discuss the effects of music, lighting, camera angle/movement, color, and more. Between sessions, participants will complete a set of activities, enabling them to apply the concepts discussed in the first session. For the second session, we’ll discuss the activities, including scenes from participants’ own work that they revised or wrote incorporating techniques borrowed from visual storytelling.
