The League of Women Voters for the Charlottesville Area is holding a live, virtual Sunday Seminar entitled “Reforming Justice for Women” on August 16, 2020, from 3:00 to 4:00 pm.
Our country has the highest incarceration rate in the world and that is unfortunately increasing. Particularly concerning is the pace at which women are being imprisoned—twice that of men since 1980, according to recent research by The Sentencing Project. Sadly, that research also shows that over 60% of women in state prisons have a child under the age of 18. The need for change is painfully clear.
This seminar features two guest speakers, both of whom are highly regarded experts in the field. They will discuss evidence-based alternatives to incarceration for women in the greater Charlottesville area—what’s new, what’s working, and what more is possible to reduce incarceration as well as criminal involvement.
The public is invited to participate in this important justice reform discussion. To register for the free event, go to the League's website at www.lwv-cva.org. A Zoom link will be sent by email to those who register by August 15.
Founded in 1920, the League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization that works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy. We look forward to continuing our mission with this event.
