Description / Mission Statement:
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic type sports for all children and adults with an intellectual disability, a cognitive delay, or a closely-related developmental disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
Area 3 of Special Olympics is one of 28 local programs under the umbrella of Special Olympics Virginia. Each area is defined by a geographic boundary of service, and Area 3 provides service to the city of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Greene, Louisa, and Fluvanna. Area 3 offers sports training in ten different sports over the course of a year. A sports season lasts 2 to 3 months and generally practices are once a week, most often on the weekend. Sports offered and month it starts include basketball in January, swimming in March, tennis in April, track in April, golf in August, soccer in August, volleyball in August, gymnastics in September, bowling in November, and skiing in December.
