Description:
|
The University of Virginia Chapter of Phi Sigma Pi, a national co-educational honor fraternity is sponsoring a 5K race on Sunday, March 21st, 2010 at 10:00 AM on the grounds of U.Va. This year, all race proceeds will be contributed to the Ryan Casey McGhee Memorial Scholarship Fund. Ryan McGhee was a talented, fun-loving student and football player at Massaponax High School who received several offers to play Division III football, instead he chose to join the Army and serve his country after high school graduation. Corporal Ryan McGhee, an Army Ranger, was killed on May 13th, 2009 while serving his country in Iraq. Corporal McGhee was fatally wounded while protecting the men in his battalion during the hunt for a weapons provider and suicide-bomber training cell. This act of selflessness that ultimately cost Ryan his life was one of the many ways Ryan gave of himself to his family, friends, strangers, and his country. Ryan served three tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq. He was also awarded the Bronze Star for valor, Meritorious Service Metal, and Purple Heart . To honor Ryan, his family has established an annual scholarship that will be awarded to one Massaponax High School senior who exemplifies Ryan’s characteristics and passions. We at Phi Sigma Pi, with your help and support, look forward to giving generously to support this fitting memorial for Ryan.
