Charlottesville Symphony

Location:

Community-Wide

Event Type(s): Arts / Theatre / Music
Organization: Charlottesville Symphony Society
Description: The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia continues its
2017-18 season with concerts on Saturday, April 28, 8:00pm, at Old Cabell Hall on the Grounds of the University of Virginia and Sunday, April 29, 3:30pm, at Charlottesville High School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center.

Music Director Benjamin Rous leads an exploration of the Milky Way with two large soundscapes: Orion by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho and Gustav Holst’s ever-popular The Planets.

Given its world premiere performance by The Cleveland Orchestra in 2003, “Orion” is a three-movement work based on the adventurous hunter in Greek mythology who becomes a radiant constellation in the night sky.

“The Planets: Suite for Large Orchestra” is a collection of seven planetary portraits: Mars, the Bringer of War; Venus, the Bringer of Peace; Mercury, the Winged Messenger; Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity; Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age; Uranus, the Magician; and Neptune, the Mystic. The conclusion of Neptune becomes more mysterious and distant with the addition of a female chorus, in these performances the Women of the UVA Chamber Singers led by Michael Slon.

The orchestra’s entire 2017-18 season is supported in part by a major grant from the Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation.

In-depth program notes are posted on the orchestra’s website, www.cvillesymphony.org two weeks prior to each Masterworks concert.

Free parking is available in the UVA Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street South, on Saturday nights and at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center on Sunday afternoon. The MLKPAC is wheelchair accessible.
