Call Mr. Robeson, Musical Play

Event Type(s): Arts / Theatre / Music, Education
Organization: Piedmont Virginia Community College
Description: Call Mr. Robeson is a roller coaster journey through the remarkable and eventful life of actor, singer and civil rights pioneer Paul Robeson. The play highlights how his radical activism caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by the leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement.

When, over the years, Robeson becomes too radical and outspoken for the establishment's liking, he is branded a traitor to his country, harassed, and denied opportunities to perform or travel. Just as physical, emotional and mental stress threaten to push him over the fine line between genius and madness, he is summoned to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee, to give the most difficult and important performance of his career.

Nigerian-born playwright Tayo Aluko portrays Robeson in this one-man show. Aluko discovered Robeson after reading his biography in 1995 and was determined to pay tribute to the man by sharing his story. Aluko is based in Liverpool, England, where he also works as an architect and a classical baritone singer.

$15 adults, $10 seniors/students. Reserved seating.
